Adam Frost’s Shocking Mental Health Struggle—Why His Family Had to Step In!
Gardener’s World presenter Adam Frost revealed that his family had to intervene when he began struggling with his mental health. The 55-year-old gardening expert opened up about his experience on The Happy Garden Podcast, which aired in January 2024.
During the interview, Adam shared that he and his family made the decision to downsize after he went through a challenging period. Reflecting on the moment, he explained that sitting down with his loved ones made him realize their biggest concern was his well-being and happiness.
He explained that his life had become overwhelmingly busy—between managing a large house and garden, running a garden school, and juggling many other commitments, he found himself stuck in the mindset of a typical 50-year-old man who remained silent for fear of disappointing his family. He admitted that, in the end, his family sat down together and made it clear that all his children wanted was for him to be well, and his wife simply wanted him to be alright.
Additionally, he mentioned that one of the reasons he chose to open up about his mental health was to raise awareness and encourage men of his age to speak out if they were not feeling happy.
Adam explained, “That’s why I talk about it now—because I know there are so many people like me. Men in their 50s who are still running at the same pace they did when they were 16, without realizing that there’s more to life.”
He shared that this realization led his family to make a significant lifestyle change, saying, “We decided to move, downsize the house, have a smaller garden, and I’ve even set aside blocks of time for myself.”
This isn’t the first time Adam has spoken openly about his health. In a previous interview with The Daily Mail, he discussed his battle with fibromyalgia, a condition characterized by widespread pain and chronic fatigue. He recalled first experiencing symptoms around 20 years ago, explaining, “It started with sharp pain all over my body, I wasn’t sleeping, and I was absolutely exhausted.”
During the interview, Adam also shared some blunt advice he once received from a psychiatrist, who warned him against retiring too soon. He recounted, “He told me, ‘If you retire, you’ll be dead in 18 months.’ He even said, ‘If you’re thinking about retiring, go up the high street, find an undertaker, and pick yourself a box.’”
