Monty Don’s Spring Gardening Tips
Renowned horticulturist Monty Don offers a wealth of advice to help gardeners make the most of the spring season. Here are some of his key tips:
Lawn Care:
-
Mowing: As grass begins to grow in March, start with light trims rather than cutting it too short. This approach promotes strong root development, resulting in a healthier lawn better equipped to withstand summer droughts.
-
Aeration: To improve soil drainage and grass health, aerate your lawn by inserting a garden fork approximately every six inches and wiggling it to create air channels. Follow this by spreading a mix of topsoil, sharp sand, and compost into the holes.
Pruning:
- Roses: Early spring is an ideal time to prune shrub or climbing roses. Pruning encourages vigorous new growth, leading to abundant flowering in the summer. Always cut back to a side shoot or leaf bud to promote healthy development.
Planting:
-
Dahlias: March is suitable for potting up new dahlia tubers. Plant them in containers with peat-free compost, ensuring the tubers are just covered. Once the risk of frost has passed, they can be transplanted outdoors for a stunning summer display.
-
Tulips: For a vibrant spring bloom, plant tulip bulbs in November. Ensure they have good drainage and plant them deeply—at least three times the depth of the bulb—to encourage robust growth and deter pests like squirrels.
Wildlife Support:
- Bird Feeding: Continue to provide food for birds as they nest and rear their young. Natural food sources can be scarce during this period, so offerings like seeds and fat balls can be invaluable.
By following Monty Don’s expert advice, gardeners can ensure their gardens thrive throughout the spring and into the summer months.
